Dearest Sattler Stakeholders,
Happy Thanksgiving! I am thrilled to share Presidential Newsletter #7. Onward to power, love, and sound minds/discipline (2 Tim 1:7).
New Videos
- We partnered with Mount Harvest to release some updated videos for Sattler. Thank you to all who contributed to this project. We would greatly appreciate your help sharing them. Feel free to send the links to friends, family, fellow church members, and strangers. Perhaps you can also show them to your local church community too.
Refer a Student
- As always, if you know of anyone who would be a good fit at Sattler, please consider making a referral (or benevolently forcing the person you have in mind to start an application). Your recommendations are truly invaluable—most of our students first heard about Sattler through a personal referral. By spreading the word and making referrals, you can help us grow our student body. Refer a Student.
The Reformation at 500: Tracking the Birth of the Free-Church Movement
- In January 2025, we will mark five hundred years since the free-church movement began to take shape in the form of a body of believers who voluntarily joined together through baptism upon their confession of faith in Christ. On January 21, 1525, a small group of laypeople in the Alpine city of Zurich gathered for prayer and Bible study in a citywoman’s home, apart from the parish church and its state-sanctioned clergy. It ended with one member asking another to baptize him “upon his faith,” representing his belief that his faith made the baptism an important moment in his life as a follower of Christ, rather than the official status of the baptizer or the links that his society made between baptism and recognition by the state.
- Read more about this historic event through a series of blog posts tracking the historical events 500 years ago here.
- Our community will also be holding an evening event on campus on January 21, 2025, to commemorate the Reformation at 500. More details will be sent later, but mark your calendars in case you are in the Boston area.
Student Life Highlights
- M29 (the evangelism club, short for Matthew 29 and representing life after the Great Commission) has been revived this year. There are 7-8 members, and evangelism outings are happening in the downtown area on Thursday evenings!
- While some of our students travelled home for Thanksgiving, those who stayed in Boston gathered at the dorms on Thanksgiving Day to share food, laughter, and gratitude during a special Friendsgiving celebration! Even while far from home, the warmth of the Sattler community brought everyone together like family.
Doubling Our Physical Library
- I wanted to give a huge thanks to the team from the recently-closed Eastern Nazarene College for allowing some Sattler folks (shout out to Mr. Miller and Elijah Milioni) to basically double the size of our physical library.
Solidarity & Mourning
- Looking back at my high school days, I regret not attending a weekly event called “Solidarity” more often, where a teacher came prepared to pray over the persecuted church as well as current events that were a cause for mourning. This month I’d like to point you to a trend to mourn, pray, and act upon.
- As highlighted in a Gallup article titled How Religious Are Americans, “Even though most Americans have a religious preference and say religion is at least fairly important to them, much smaller proportions regularly attend religious services. Asked whether they personally had attended church, synagogue, mosque or temple in the past seven days, an average of 32% of U.S. adults in 2023 reported they had done so, either in person or virtually. In 2000, 44% had gone to church in the past seven days, and in 1958, 49% had.”
Quote Bank Challenge
- Did you know one of our alumni created a Sattler Quote Bank? It’s filled with memorable moments from our staff, faculty, and students. Each month, we’ll award Sattler merchandise to the first three people who correctly guess the origin of a featured quote!
This Month’s Quote:
“There's a high coffee consumption; we need a 'prohibition' just for 13 days and 'dry agents'; alternatively, less quizzing and midterms.”
- Send an email with your answer to president@sattler.edu for a chance to win.
