Presidential Newsletter #6

Dearest Sattler Stakeholders,
I am thrilled to share Presidential Newsletter #6. Onward to power, love, and sound minds/discipline (2 Tim 1:7).
Tribute
- In a previous newsletter, I shared that Clark Wray will transition to a fractional Chief Information Officer role while taking on another full-time position in Boston. His fingerprint can be found across nearly every part of Sattler, and we are deeply grateful for his dedication and impact. Thank you, Clark, for everything!
Exploring Exploring Artificial Intelligence and Ontology with Dr. Ben Harris
- Catch Sattler’s own Dr. Ben Harris on Anabaptist Perspectives, where he dives into artificial intelligence’s complexities with Marlin Sommers. This episode, now live, covers the optimistic and cautious sides of AI and questions the nature of “artificial intelligence” itself. Look forward to more from Dr. Harris later this month, where he’ll discuss AI’s place in academia. Watch the interview here.
Student Life
- Our students continue to inspire with their dedication to community and service! The Sattler Choir, led by junior Josh Nolt, has been an exceptional source of joy and camaraderie on campus. The choir not only uplifts those who participate but also enriches the spirit of everyone who hears their music.
- In addition, we’re excited about new student-led initiatives in service. Recently, a few students visited a homebound couple in Back Bay, sharing a meal and their companionship. It’s heartening to see students live out our values of community and compassion.
- The freshmen and sophomores have also started a daily morning journaling group at 6:00 AM, fostering reflection, accountability, and a supportive space for personal growth. It’s these moments that embody the spirit of Sattler and remind us of the blessings of shared journeys.
- Last Saturday, some Sattler students took on a 5K race, enjoying the challenge, the crisp fall air, and the chance to push themselves alongside friends. Whether they were racing for a personal best or just enjoying the experience, it was a morning full of fun, fitness, and plenty of high fives.
Podcast Highlights
- While we redesign our podcast studio setup (apologies for any temporary changes in quality!), here are some recent episodes you might enjoy:
- Greek Never Died: A fascinating discussion with Sattler’s Jose Diaz. Listen here.
- Navigating the World of Christian Denominations: Joshua Lindsey from Ready to Harvest talks with us about Christian denominations and their diverse expressions. Listen here.
Talks at Sattler
- We recently hosted Joshua Lindsey, creator of the popular YouTube channel Ready to Harvest, for a Lunch & Learn session on Surviving YouTube as a Christian: Christian Content Creation Can Be a Good Thing. With 169K subscribers, Joshua’s channel dives deep into the complexities of Christian denominations. His talk highlighted the challenges and opportunities of creating Christian content online and the power of social media in bridging denominational divides. Watch his talk.
Q4 Board Meeting
- Our Q4 Board Meeting is coming up on November 16. We appreciate your prayers for wisdom and discernment in decision-making as we move forward with our goals.
Quote Bank Challenge
- Did you know one of our alumni created a Sattler Quote Bank? It’s filled with memorable moments from our staff, faculty, and students. Each month, we’ll award Sattler merchandise to the first three students/faculty/staff at Sattler as well as the first three people not at Sattler who correctly guess the origin of a featured quote!
This Month’s Quote:
“My kids think our house is a democracy. It's not. It's a benevolent dictatorship.”
- Send an email with your answer to president@sattler.edu for a chance to win.
A Special Note from My Family
- I am thrilled to share that our family welcomed our third child, Pearl Jane, earlier this October. It’s a joy and blessing to welcome a baby girl into our lives, and I am immensely grateful. Our senior class even presented Pearl with a Sattler-branded onesie to celebrate our fanatical institutional pride!
Feedback
- As always, your feedback is welcome and valued! Feel free to reach out to me by responding to this email with any thoughts on making these newsletters more meaningful and engaging.
Yours for Christ,
Zack Johnson
