How Chemistry Class Expanded My Faith and Friendships
Summary
Senior Human Biology student Sheryl Good reflects on her experience taking chemistry courses at neighboring universities and how stepping beyond Sattler’s campus led to meaningful friendships, personal growth, and deeper faith.
One unique part of Sattler’s Human Biology program is that we take our chemistry courses and labs at other local universities. I have found these experiences to be extremely enriching and important for my faith journey at Sattler, especially through the relationships I have been privileged to build as a result of interacting in these spaces.
First, stepping out of the “Sattler bubble” forced me out of my comfort zone. I was very nervous and felt intimidated stepping into unfamiliar territory. This prompted me to face my insecurities and taught me so much about perseverance and pushing myself beyond what I thought I was capable of. Although Sattler’s small, intentional community is a huge asset, I found myself blessed to make friends beyond 100 Cambridge Street.
What did this look like, you may ask? Well, it all started on the first Thursday of the Fall 2023 semester when I, along with a Sattler classmate or two, hesitantly asked a pleasant woman in the Harvard University Science Center if that door opened to the General Chemistry class. This led to a conversation. We were all relieved to have found someone looking for the same place, and we exchanged numbers for study group purposes. Although we soon ended the conversation and headed into the classroom, this moment began a journey for me of seeking to build friendships with the classmates I encountered.
Some of my treasured memories with fellow students include sharing chemistry woes over waffles at Zinneken’s in Harvard Square, hearing about a friend’s sewing hobbies, exchanging testimonies on the Red Line, and celebrating with a friend as she shared about her future at a veterinary school in Scotland.
Last spring, when Harvard Extension School shared a LinkedIn post highlighting their pre-med program graduates, I realized I could name over half of the people in that photo. I know that these, and many more, relationships have impacted my life in profound ways, and I will always be grateful for the opportunities God placed in my path. I pray I never forget what a blessing friendship is.
