The Process of Becoming

Summary
Angelica reflects on her first experience in medical research and the slow process of discovering her calling in healthcare. Through lab work, personal history, and faith, she learns that God often shapes us through the journey itself.
Change and decision-making are slow, much like water gently dripping onto stone. It is a quiet, persistent process that shapes us bit by bit over time. For those of us studying or working in healthcare, it’s natural to wish we could skip over the struggle and step straight into our calling: confident, equipped, and ready to make a difference. Many of us dream of bringing healing to clinics and hospitals, serving patients with compassion, and living out the work we believe God has entrusted to us. It’s a beautiful vision, isn’t it? Yet the journey toward it is rarely straightforward. It winds through seasons of pause, reflection, and repeated beginnings.
Embracing the Journey
This past summer, God gave me my first opportunity to work in a lab, and I remember the thrill. It was a sense of fullness and purpose like never before. Helping women in the urology department, using research to fight battles that so many face, I felt deeply connected not only to the science but also to my own story. The struggles of my mother, grandmother, and countless women before me suddenly became personal. I knew then: this was part of my calling.
It wasn’t just about learning content; it was about learning by doing. I saw epithelial and stromal cells for the first time, delicate yet determined, fragile yet persistent. And in their quiet resilience, I saw something of us. Even at my most alive, though, God reminded me: the process itself is sacred. “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” (Philippians 1:6). I don’t know whether I’ll become a doctor, a nurse, or return to lab work again. But I do know that through every experience, God is transforming me.
The Sacredness of Timing
God doesn’t fixate on outcomes; He cherishes the process. If results were all that mattered, He wouldn’t have spent forty years shaping the heart of Israel in the desert or waited generations before sending Jesus into the world. His timing isn’t slow; it’s intentional, tender, and filled with purpose.
Growing in the Wilderness
Sometimes it feels as though everything I once excelled at has been stripped away—my skills, my confidence, even my sense of direction. Yet perhaps that’s where true strength and wisdom begin to take root. Like Joseph in prison or Moses in the wilderness, God calls us to find peace in the pause. “The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still” (Exodus 14:14). Drop by drop, He is shaping us anew.
Encouragement for the Road Ahead
To every healthcare student and professional: your journey, with all its uncertainties and challenges, is not a detour. Each moment, whether spent in the lab, at a patient’s bedside, or in a quiet season of waiting, is part of who you are becoming. Hold onto hope when progress feels slow or unclear. The process is not wasted. It is where God forms courage, compassion, and depth in us, one drop at a time.
